The goal:

The Taylor Family Digital Library is a new state-of-the-art learning and research centre at the heart of the University of Calgary campus. It is one of the most information-rich and technologically-advanced facilities in Canada. The objectives of the grand opening were to honour the donors – the Taylor family; to thank and acknowledge all levels of government for their contributions; to recognize all donors and engage prospective donors; to create excitement and build pride within the University community and to use the opening celebration to create buzz and enhance the University’s reputation among a wide variety of external stakeholders.

The project:

In July 2011, fresh from the successful execution of the Royal Visit, Momentum Communications was asked serve as project manager for the launch of the Taylor Family Digital Library at the University of Calgary. Responsibilities included managing a cross-functional, high-level team of ten to ensure the event was successfully executed, and managing logistics for the launch event, which included approximately 500 guests, tours for about 120, and a private luncheon for 60 following the launch.

The result:

Premier Alison Redford, Mayor Naheed Nenshi, the Taylor Family, President Elizabeth Cannon, the Student Union President and Grad Students’ Association President all participated in a well-executed launch of the library. Aptly featuring a high-tech micro-tile presentation and demonstrations of the innovations built into the library, the event successfully achieved the objectives. The Taylor family were thrilled to celebrate the opening of the library in such a public way, and to host their close friends at the reception that followed. Several media outlets attended and featured the library and its technology on their newscasts. Internal and external audiences were enthused about the launch, and provided several positive comments to administration about their pride in the University.
